Integrated Learning Area (ILA)
At OLSH we understand the preciousness of each individual student and just how unique the learning needs of each individual are. Our Integrated Learning Area [iLA] brings together the expertise of a wide range of support teachers in the areas of EAL, Giftedness, Special Education, Indigenous education, careers and school counselling in a flexible and inviting environment for all students. The iLA team uses their expertise to support the individual needs of students, and benefits from a teamwork approach with a shared resource area.
We recognise that adaptability and independent learning are becoming as essential as subject content for today's students. It is apparent that students often struggle to cope in a setting where independent learning is expected and is the key to success. The challenge for our school is to prepare students to meet the increasing demands of the world outside the school environment, and to have the opportunity to explore flexible learning options. In addition they should be encouraged to take increased responsibility for identifying and achieving their learning needs, to build upon individual strengths, and to experience success. For students, the Integrated Learning Area compliments the classroom experience and the intentions of the SACE by providing the location, space, resources, multimedia facilities and expertise of a multidisciplinary team to allow guided discovery and consolidation of learning.
For staff the Integrated Learning Area is a place to explore other ways of teaching, student engagement and learning. An environment where flexible teaching spaces, work spaces, and presentation spaces can be reconfigured to suit the needs of the class. An area to explore the benefits of different teaching methodologies. The iLA is beneficial for the whole school community and is situated centrally, merging the junior and senior schools to ensure access for all.
